A Blueprint for 21 Century Road Ice Prediction

This paper attempts to summarise the main research gaps evident in the field of road ice prediction. Suggestions are made for improvements to numerical road weather models, mostly by the incorporation of a spatial model component to eliminate the need for thermal mapping. It is proposed that alternative and efficient survey techniques are developed which utilise the full potential of GPS and GIS technology. The paper concludes with an example system and calls for greater collaboration between research organisations worldwide. ______________________________________________________________________________
